Substance Abuse
DMH has received The Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant from SAMHSA/Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. The grant is designed to improve the alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) prevention infrastructure by strengthening the prevention state plan, improving cultural competencies, targeting resources to areas of need, and initiating a statewide underage drinking initiative. The grant targets underage drinking because alcohol remains the most heavily abused substance.
Suicide Prevention
DMH has received a grant by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) to develop and implement suicide prevention and early intervention activities to youth directly impacted by Hurricane Katrina in the coastal counties of George, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson , Pearl River, and Stone Counties . The project provides for training of individuals in middle and high schools, as well as in community colleges and universities, in effective practices and programs for recognizing youth at-risk for suicide and making appropriate referrals for mental health and other interventions that may be needed.
